
Quality control of signage is a paramount focus for signage manufacturers. What are the factors that determine the quality of signage? Based on years of experience in the signage industry, the author concludes that the quality of signs and labels primarily depends on four main objective factors: the design plan, production processes, equipment, and raw materials.
In particular, whether a design plan is rational not only determines the quality of the signage but also significantly impacts its production cost. Subjectively speaking, however, every participant involved in the manufacturing process is the fundamental determinant of quality. Establishing a comprehensive and systematic quality control system is the essential path for signage manufacturers to ensure quality assurance.
Rational Signage Design Plan
The primary purpose of graphic design is the presentation of content and the realization of visual effects. Its content mostly consists of graphic and textual information, presented primarily in a two-dimensional format. Signage design, however, differs from graphic design. Its methods of information display encompass not only graphics and text but also multimedia elements. Even the form of the signage itself can carry different meanings.
Furthermore, the materials used in sign manufacturing are highly diverse, and the production processes vary significantly.
Therefore, a signage designer must not only achieve the intended function of the product but also be capable of selecting appropriate materials and processes. Considering various materials and production techniques with differing performance characteristics and costs, the designer must thoroughly evaluate the feasibility of the manufacturing plan. Balancing quality and cost, the goal is to design a practical and cost-effective signage production solution.
Appropriate Selection of Signage Materials
Different materials possess distinct properties and are suitable for different manufacturing processes. The same sign can be fabricated from various materials, leading to differences in both quality and cost. For instance, the choice between aluminum and stainless steel for an outdoor blade sign depends on factors such as its shape, size, installation location, and budget.
Additionally, the same material comes in different specifications. Take acrylic door number plates as an example. Common acrylic sheet thicknesses include 3mm, 5mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Typically, a 5mm thickness is sufficient for door numbers. If the goal is to facilitate engraving for shaping and emphasize a three-dimensional effect, 8mm acrylic sheets might be used.
Increased acrylic thickness inevitably leads to greater weight per unit. Since acrylic plates are usually adhered to the door surface, considerations regarding installation difficulty and adhesion strength become crucial. Simultaneously, increased thickness raises material costs. This illustrates that even for the same material, specification selection must be reasonable; higher specifications do not automatically equate to better quality.
Selection of Signage Processing Equipment
With the continuous development of the signage industry, new types of production and processing equipment are constantly emerging. Common equipment used in signage manufacturing includes shearing machines, bending machines, laser engravers, UV printers, and more. While newer machinery often offers enhanced performance, the selection of equipment should not be based solely on novelty.
Manufacturers should consider their own capabilities and needs, as well as the requirements of their primary products. Factors such as equipment capacity, precision, energy consumption, and other operational aspects should be evaluated comprehensively to choose machinery that adequately meets their production requirements.
Signage Manufacturing Processes
Among the various factors affecting signage quality, the manufacturing process is one of the most stable. Processes such as welding, painting/baking, screen printing, UV printing, etching, and engraving are now highly mature and stable.
Different processes have different scopes of application. Taking surface graphics on signage as an example, the two most commonly used techniques by manufacturers are screen printing and UV printing. UV printing is performed by a printer, which typically uses a fixed type of ink. Changing to inks with different properties can be cumbersome. Furthermore, UV printing imposes significant limitations on the shape and size of compatible materials; items too large to fit on the printer's bed cannot be processed.
Manual screen printing, however, faces almost none of these limitations. Its drawbacks include the inability to produce gradient color graphics, the need for multiple color separation steps for multi-colored designs, and significantly lower efficiency compared to UV printers. The two main parameters for evaluating surface graphic quality are precision and longevity. In terms of precision, UV printing is superior.
However, manual screen printing allows for easy switching between different ink types with specific properties, often resulting in better graphic stability and longevity. In daily production, UV printing is often used for high-volume, small indoor signage graphics, whereas manual screen printing is preferred for large, irregularly shaped outdoor signage graphics. The skill level in executing a process greatly impacts final quality. It is important to note that when adopting new processes, considerations must extend beyond novelty to include workflow integration and stability.
The Human Factor
The four factors mentioned above can be considered objective determinants of quality. Subjectively, the decisive factor is people. The participants in every step of the signage production process are the foundation of quality assurance. This includes the welding skill of the operator fabricating the main structure, the proficiency of the technician performing screen printing, and so on.
Furthermore, as signage products are mostly custom-made, many manufacturers lack a standardized quality control system tailored to their products. Establishing a corresponding product quality control system based on the specific characteristics of one's signage products is a crucial cornerstone for ensuring consistent quality.
